2 killed, 1 injured as car falls into roadside canal
Soon after the death of the Kolkata deputy mayor’s husband in a road accident on the Basanti highway, two persons were killed on Saturday morning when their car fell into a roadside canal there after it lost control. Another passenger of the car was injured.
The mishap took place as the car was about to cross a bridge over the canal in the Coal Depot area in Tiljala at around 8.20 am. The victims were identified as Achintya Kumar Dhar (35) and Ashish Dutta (36). Dutta, of Mandalpara in Baidyabati of Hooghly, was the car driver, according to the police.
Dhar from Baranagar was sitting beside Dutta. They may have drowned in the canal after the fall of the car, the police suspects. They were going to Bantala.
Also from Barangar and an acquaintence of Dhar, Sudipta Ghosh (40), who was sitting in the back seat, received critical injuries.
He has been admitted to a private hospital. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
The car was recovered later. On March 27 evening, Abdul Momen (50), husband of deputy mayor Farzana Alam, was knocked down at Kantatala by a speeding truck.
The lawyer was riding a motorcycle was heading for Bojherhat from Park Circus.
