3 years on, mother still awaits justice
Three years after Rizwanur Rehman’s mysterious death, his mother Kiswar Jehan is still in waiting for insaaf. She, however, said that she has not lost hope. “Mujhe umeed hai ke mujhe insaaf milega aur sach ki hi jeet hogi (I hope that I will get justice and truth will triumph),” she said on Tuesday at her Tiljala Road residence with a photograph of Rizwanur in her lap.
The good-looking computer graphics teacher was found dead on the railway tracks on September 21, 2007. On the morning of his third barsi, Rizwanur’s family members went to Gobra burial ground and offered prayers at his grave. A Raksha-bandhan programme was held by Tunir, a non-governmental organisation run by film-maker Anindita Sarabdhikary, at Nandan to mark Rizwanur’s death anniversary.
In the evening, a condolence meeting was held near his house in Tiljala attended by, among others, Union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy, writer Mahasweta Devi and human rights activist Sujato Bhadra. Rizwanur died a month after his marriage with Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, on August 18 in 2007. His family still insists that he was murdered even though the CBI concluded in its probe that it was case of a suicide. “Rizwanur could not have committed suicide,” his mother said.
