4 tourists from state killed in Arunachal
Four tourists from Kolkata, who had gone to Arunachal Pradesh, died after their car toppled down a mountain and fell into a gorge due to poor visibility owing to bad weather. The incident that occured in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday evening also left four others injured.
The deceased were identified as Asim Bhattacharya and his wife Kaberi, residents of Manzil Apartment, 29, Vidyasagar Sarani in Santoshpur and Monica Dasgupta and her relative Sreelekha Ghosh, residents of 97, Sukanta Park in Keshtopur.
Bhattacharya was a senior officer of the Dalhousie branch of the UBI bank while his wife was an officer at the Santoshpur branch of the same bank. Monica was also an employee of the Sreebhumi branch of the UBI bank.
Earlier, eight members of three families from Santoshpur and Keshtopur had started their trip from Kolkata on Sunday. After spending a day at Tezpur in Assam, they started for Tawang on Tuesday.
In the afternoon, their vehicle broke down while crossing the Sela pass. By the time, the driver could repair the car, it started raining and turned dark. As the vehicle started moving, it skidded and fell into a gorge.
Despite being injured, the driver managed to come up and alert a military camp 2.5 kilometres away from the spot.
Monica’s husband Gautam Dasgupta, her son Ritam Dasgupta and her mother-in-law Shefali Dasgupta were rescued in a critical state. Another survivor, Bharato Ghosh, is the mother of Sreelekha Ghosh.
Sports minister Kanti Ganguly accompanied the relatives of the injured persons to Guwahati on Wednesday. “The injured persons have been admitted at the International hospital in Guwahati,” Mr Ganguly said.
