5 jail officials suspended for Dum Dum prisoner abuse
Five senior officers of the Dum Dum Central Jail, including the jail superintendent, have been suspended on the allegation of mental and physical torture on some prisoners. Departmental proceedings against the officers will also be started shortly. The state administration has asked the additional director general (prisons) B.D. Sharma to investigate into the incident which happened on August 23.
State home secretary Samar Ghosh said, “According to the primary investigation report, it has been found that the allegation is genuine. On the basis of the primary report, five officers have been suspended. Since the allegation is serious, they have been suspended straight away, instead of being served with showcause notices.” The officers who have been suspended are jail superintendent Biplab Dasgupta, chief controller Kripamoy Nandi, chief head warden Sarbeshwar Tudu, head warden Biswajit Bhowmick and head warden Debananda Orano.
On August 23, nine prisoners were allegedly beaten up for misconduct. The jail officials had stated that some contrabands were found on the prisoners. The prisoners alleged that they were forced to parade naked for about an hour.

Youth shot dead at Sodepur

Sept. 15: A youth was shot dead near his home at Sodepur on Tuesday night. Though the police suspects that atleast three persons, all known to the victim, are behind the murder, no one has been arrested till reports last came in. Kajol Das, 28, a resident of Natagarh Saradapally was last seen chatting with some local youth, a few meters away from his house near Natagarh Kalitala area After sometime, locals heard three gunshots. One of the bullets hit Kajol. he later died in the hospital.
