Another CPM leader held, spills the beans on killings
More truth in the massacre of seven Trinamul Congress activists have started tumbling out as the CID arrested Bimanbihari Ghosh, another accused and an associate of CPI(M) strongman Sushanta Ghosh. He was caught from Uttar Piyashala in West Midnapore on Sunday night and has been remanded in seven days’ police custody following his production at the Midnapore court on Monday.
During interrogation, the CPI(M) branch committee secretary of Piyashala spilled the beans naming several local CPI(M) workers and revealed their roles in the slaughtering of Trinamul workers on September 22, 2002. He told the CID detectives that it was Sanatan Das who had shot seven Trinamul Congress workers to death. Confessing his role, Bimanbihari revealed that he had removed and buried the bodies. The local CPI(M) leader will be brought from West Midnapore to the CID headquarters at Bhawani Bhavan for further grilling.
Meanwhile, examining the documents seized from the former minister’s houses, the CID has found that his younger brother Prashanta had extorted several lakhs from the villagers to raise fund for the party and buy arms and ammunition from Assam, Bihar and neighbouring country Nepal. The CID is now after Prashanta.
Questioning Subhamoy Ghosh, the nephew of Sushanta Ghosh at the Bhawani Bhavan on Sunday, the detectives also learnt that the MLA and his brother Prashanta used to stay at his flat in Shibpur of Howrah. “Sushanta and Prashanta stayed there when they used to come for treatment to Kolkata,” said CID’s deputy inspector general of police (operations) K. Jayaraman. He added, “Besides Mr Ghosh’s two security guards, on-duty at that time, were questioned also. They told that they used to accompany them on official duty and could not remember his movement on September 22. We are verifying their claims.” To find out about Mr Ghosh’s official car, the agency is now examining its logbook and searching for the pilot car from government records.
For the first time in the CID probe, the role of the then superintendent of police of West Midnapore and inspector in charge of Garbeta police station has also come under scanner and the agency is gearing up to interrogate them.
