Another debt-ridden farmer kills self

Farmer suicides continued to haunt West Bengal as one more death was reported in Murshidabad on Monday. A debt-ridden farmer, Hironmoy Ghosh, 44, committed suicide after being unable to repay his loans. The incident took place at Kuntia village in Burwan police station area.
The victim consumed pesticide on Sunday afternoon and was admitted to the Kandi sub-divisional hospital which later referred him to a private hospital in Berhampore. He died there on Monday. His cousin Dibakar Ghosh said, “My elder brother earlier owned nine bighas of land but was later compelled to sell three bighas of fertile paddy field to repay a part of his loans. However, he again took loans from farmers cooperative society and private money lenders. Despite having a good harvest, he failed to sell the crops. In the meantime, private money lenders started pressurising him to return the money. In despair, he consumed pesticide.”
Burwan BDO Subrata Mohanto, however, brushed aside the allegation that the farmer had committed suicide unable to sell his paddy.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
