Bengal Cong wary of Mamata’s clout
The West Bengal Congress leaders on Thursday decided against doing or saying anything that might queer the pitch for the alliance with the Trinamul Congress. Realising Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s growing importance in the UPA, the state Congress leaders have decided to leave the decision on seat-
adjustment for the coming Assembly polls entirely on the discretion of the party high command. The decision was taken in a meeting of the district presidents of the Congress which was held at Bidhan Bhavan, the state Congress headquarters.
In the meeting, chaired by state party president Manas Bhunia, the district presidents presented reports about the party’s strength and weaknesses in various Assembly seats.
The presidents of Murshidabad and Malda districts were not present in the meeting. Mr Bhunia asked the district presidents to strengthen the party organisations in their respective districts. “Our goal should be to make Congress stand on its own feet across the state,” a district president quoted him as saying in the meeting.
