Bratya hints at combined HS syllabus
The state government is planning to revert to the old system of holding Higher Secondary (HS) examination based on the combined syllabi of Class 11 and 12 even as majority of the teachers associations on Tuesday conveyed their objection to the “no detention” policy of the Centre to the syllabus committee of the state school education department.
“Detention policy will actually judge the quality of the students and help the schools maintain their academic standards,” one of the members of the West Bengal Secondary Teachers Association said.
State school and higher education minister Bratya Basu said, “We are discussing the matter with the syllabus committee and have apprised chief minister Mamata Banerjee of the development.” Mr Basu informed that the move to combine the HS syllabus was prompted by the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education complaint of poor performance of the students in Class 11 examination ever since the syllabus was bifurcated by the previous Left Front government from the academic year 2005-06. Further on Monday, Mr Basu along with science and technology minister Rabiranjan Chatterjee had called on Ms Banerjee to discuss the move of bringing back marks system instead of gradation in HS that was introduced by the previous Left Front government.
