Aug. 16: Mamata Banerjee government will increase the amount of festival bonus or ex gratia. The decision was taken in a meeting at the Writers’ Buildings between the chief minister and the representatives of 11 employees unions of the state secretariat. State finance minister Amit Mitra was also present in the meeting. So far, the Left Front government had been paying `1,000 as ex gratia or festival bonus but the employees had been demanding a hike. Ms Banerjee assured them that in 2011 they would get a bigger bonus.
Another major decision taken in the meeting was making the health scheme cashless. Now the employees would not have to pay any premium for their health insurance. Earlier, the state government had announced that the Fifth Pay Commission arrears would now be paid to only those employees who were to retire shortly. The other employees raised objection to this decision forcing the chief minister to agree to pay at least a part of the arrears to everyone.
Ms Banerjee, however, made it clear that the state government would not pay the dearness allowance for the next three months.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
