Buddha ready to face legal battle
The statement former chief minister and CPI(M) politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee made about the honesty of chief minister Mamata Banerjee was not defamatory in nature. Mr Bhattacharjee’s lawyer Rabishankar Chatterjee made this clear in his reply to the legal notice sent to his client by the ruling Trinamul Congress.
Former mayor of Kolkata and leading lawyer Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya said that Mr Bhattacharjee was ready to face any legal battle in the court. “In the reply to the legal notice, Mr Bhattacharjee’s lawyer had informed the Trinamul Congress leader Mukul Roy’s lawyer that he could go to court at his own peril,” he added. Mr Bhattacharjee in a television interview had said that he did not believe that Ms Banerjee was a symbol of honesty. Reacting swiftly to this statement, Trinamul Congress All India general secretary Mukul Roy asked lawyer Rajdeep Mazumdar to send a legal notice to Mr Bhattacharjee. The notice, sent by Mr Mazumdar asked Mr Bhattacharjee to apologise publicly within 48 hours for his remarks against the Trinamul chief, failing which the party would start legal proceedings against him in both civil and criminal courts.
Mr Bhattacharyya said that the legal notice sent by the Trinamul Congress also asked Mr Bhattacharjee to furnish the documents on the basis of which he had questioned Ms Banerjee’s honesty. “Our stand is very clear. Mr Bhattacharjee did not say that Ms Banerjee was dishonest. What he said was that he did not subscribe to the view that she was a symbol of honesty. This is his personal opinion and no case can rest on an opinion,” he added.
The Trinamul Congress lawyer, Mr Mazumdar said that he was making preparations for filing a defamation suit against the former chief minister on Monday or Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Trinamul Congress MP Saugata Roy said that Ms Banerjee was the most honest politician not only in the state but in the entire country. “Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee could not save his Assembly seat even after being the chief minister for 12 years. He should keep his mouth shut for at least five years,” he added.
