Ceiling fan falls on examinee’s head
The first day of the Madhyamik Examination 2013 conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education was marred by couple of incidents on Monday. While an examinee was injured when a ceiling fan fell on his head during the examination at a school in north Kolkata, three regular students were allegedly forced to write the question paper of the old syllabus.
The injured student Shams Moinuddin of Mohammed Jaan High School, whose examination centre was at Chitpur Oriental Seminary School, was rushed to hospital where he was given two stitches. He was then taken back to the examination centre and given extra time to complete his answer script. The police visited the school to inquire how the incident occurred. Moinuddin said, “After the invigilators distributed the papers, I was reading it when suddenly a fan blade fell on my head.” Terming the incident as unfortunate, board administrator Kalyanmoy Ganguli said: “We have sought a report from the venue secretary who is also the headmaster of the school.”
On the other hand, the invigilators at a school in Rashbehari took away the correct question papers of three regular students of Beltala Girls School and gave them wrong ones after 15 minutes of the examination. The guardians alleged that despite repeated pleadings by the students, the invigilators did not listen to them. When the guardians went to the board office to complain to Mr Ganguli, they were allegedly threatened by the board authorities. But later Mr Ganguli admitted the mistake and said that the matter would be looked into.
Despite the identification of the areas where students undertake mass cheating, the board failed to restrict the menace. Incidents of mass cheating were reported from various centres in North Dinajpur district on the very first day of the examination.
Meanwhile, Uttara Gorai, a resident of Rheny Road in Purulia town took her examination at the hospital after delivering a baby girl on Sunday night. District inspector of school Radha Rani Mukherjee said, “We made necessary arrangement after hearing the girl’s willingness to take the examination.” Uttara is a student of Girish Chandra Vidyapith in Purulia town had originally got her centre at Chittaranjan Girls High School.
