Chief govt whip demands ex-CM’s arrest

Chief government whip Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay on the floor of the House demanded the arrest of former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the ground that CPI(M) MLA Sushanta Ghosh who masterminded the killing of Trinamul Congress workers enjoyed his blessings.

He also demanded the arrest of West Midnapore CPI(M) district secretary Dipak Sarkar. The Speaker, however, later expunged Mr Bhattacharjee and Mr Sarkar’s names from the proceedings.
“When Sushanta Ghosh had indulged in mass killing, the former chief minister was the police minister also. The police in the district then was working as per instruction of the CPI(M) district secretary and the superintendent of police had no power virtually. The former chief minister had full knowledge of how the mass killing took place and where the bodies were buried. Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and West Midnapore CPI(M) district secretary Dipak Sarkar should be arrested and interrogated,” Mr Chattopadhyay demanded. According to Trinamul Congress insiders, Mr Chattopadhyay made this demand in the House on the instruction of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier, Left Front MLAs accused that the state government was pursuing vindictive politics against hundreds of its leaders and supporters, including Mr Ghosh.
Refuting those accusations, state public health engineering minister Subrata Mukherjee asked, “How Sushanta Ghosh who was responsible for the killings of 200 people could retain his House membership. Membership of an MLA was cancelled on a much lighter charge during the tenure of the previous Left Front government.”
Raising the issue in the zero hour, state irrigation minister Manas Bhunia said that the state took the right step by arresting Mr Ghosh.
