CM compensation to deceased’s kin
In a damage control exercise, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday evening went to the house of Trinamul Congress worker Adhir Maity. Ms Banerjee paid condolences to the widow of the deceased partyman and handed over a cheque of `2 lakh as compensation. She consoled Maity’s three daughters who complained about local councillor Shambhunath Kow’s atrocities. The chief minister assured them that Kow would be arrested and strong action would be taken against him.
However, a day after the death of Maity following an intra-party strife, accused Kow is still at large and untraceable by the Kolkata police. They only managed to find his abandoned white car at Kamardanga rail gate near Sealdah with nothing but a black briefcase and a diary. Locals alleged that after Ms Banerjee’s order, the police had two hours to take the councillor into custody but they could only get hold of his close associate Petkata Bablu.
On Thursday, angry locals held mass demonstration voicing the inaction of Kolkata police to capture the accused. They complained that Kow was involved in multiple real estate projects which flouted KMC’s norms.
