Confidential data, reports feared stolen in theft
An incident of theft was detected on Saturday at the central office of the Visvabharati University (VBU). The theft came as a surprise because the varsity has been maintaining a high level of security after the Nobel medallion theft incident.
An FIR has been lodged at Bolpur police station. No one has been arrested so far.
The Visvabharati University employees found that the doors of the internal audit department and confidential section were broken. These rooms housed confidential reports and data of the varsity. The burglary sent shockwaves across the university that has been plagued by a number of controversies over the past 18 months. There has been a number of allegations against vice-chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta.
Sources also claimed that it was evident that the burglars were trying to protect the interests of those who could have been exposed by the impending audit of the VBU.
Police sources said that miscreants broke one lock of confidential section and two locks of internal audit section rooms. They broke five almirahs and a computer.
They fully damaged the hard disk of the computer. Police officials are not ruling out the involvement of ‘insiders.’
President of Karmi Sabha, Debabrata Sarkar demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry.
The spokesperson of the varsity, Sabujkoli Sen, said, “An incident has taken place. The police is investigating the case. We are helping them in all possible way.”
“We have started investigation. No one has been arrested so far,” Murlidhar Sharma, SP Birbhum informed.
