Conman warns woman of snatchers on prowl, steals her jewellery
An elderly woman was robbed off her gold necklace by a conman in Behala on Wednesday morning.
Aloka Ghosh, 53, of Purbasha, was waiting at the bus stop near Behala tram depot at around 11 am. A youth came to her and showed her a packet claiming that he had found it on the road and it contained money.
He sought her advice on what he should do be with the money. After striking a conversation, the 24-year-old asked Ms Ghosh where she was going after noticing her jewellery. Ms Ghosh told him that she was going to attend a family function.
The youth then advised her to not to travel wearing the jewellery as snatchers were on the prowl. He offered her a bag to keep them inside. Unmindful of his motive, Ms Ghosh gave away her necklace, ear-rings and finger-rings to him who put them in the bag helped her to board an auto-rickshaw.
Later when Ms Ghosh opened the bag, she found her jewellery missing and a bunch of papers with two notes of `20 in it. She lodged a complaint with the Behala police station. She was taken to Lalbazar where the artists of the detective department made a sketch of the accused as per descriptions.
Meanwhile, the owner of a taxi in which a tax consultant was allegedly robbed off `1.20 crore by a gang was questioned by the Hastings police for clues. Tracking down the taxi number, the police called Ram Singh, the vehicle owner from Durga Charan Mitra Street, for questioning. His son and daughter-in-law were also quizzed.
