Cops lay strict guidelines for Puja preparations

The Kolkata police laid down an elaborate guideline on Saturday for the Puja organisers for the coming Puja season in 2011. A meeting was held between police commissioner Ranjit Kumar Pachnanda and all the Puja organisers at Kala Mandir in the afternoon.
Besides the director of the fire and emergency services department, Gopal Bhattacharya, and senior officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, CESC also attended the meeting which continued for nearly one-and-half-an-hours. CM Mamata Banerjee herself will also sit for a meeting with the Puja organisers on August 17 at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.
It was decided in the meeting that the Puja pandals structure would not be allowed on the footpath. Besides, the Puja organisers would have to submit their applications for permission to the city police within September 9, according to the guideline. No new application for Puja will be allowed in 2011, a senior police officer who was present at the meeting said.
These apart, the idol immersion would have to be completed by the Puja organisers within a single day, i.e, October 8, he added. Emphasis has also been laid by the city police on the security measures by he organisers.

CPM says govt fails to tackle flood crisis
Age correspondent
Kolkata

Aug. 13: The Opposition Left Front on Saturday criticised the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to take adequate measures to tackle the flood-like situation.
“Due to incessant rains, several districts of West Bengal have been badly affected. As a result of which lakhs of people have suffering untold misery. However, the kind of war-footing efforts which the administration should have taken to combat the natural calamity are not evident,” a Left Front committee statement said.
Only a day ago, the Left Front had organised a protest rally in the city which was addressed by, among others, former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose.
Both had launched scathing attacks against the state government for targeting the communists and also for its failures on many fronts.
