CPI questions LF structure

After laying the entire blame for the crushing electoral drubbing on the CPI(M), the CPI has now raised a question about the existing structure of the Left Front. Insinuating the big brother party for “its unilateral way of functioning,” CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan asked: “Why the chairman of the Left Front should always be a CPI(M) leader.

Why the office of the Left Front should permanently be housed at the CPI(M) head office on Alimuddin Street.” Significantly, Forward Bloc, another constituent of the Front had also sought an “overhauling” of the Left Front.
Pointing out that since the Left is in the Opposition which calls for a more “responsible and constructive” role to play, Mr Bardhan said: “This demands more cohesion among the allies and should not be an one-party affair.”
The CPI had time and again criticised the functioning of the Left Front even when it was in power. Now that it is out of power, there must be a change in the way of its functioning, he added.
“The Left Front as the Opposi-tion should function in a much more collective way on the basis of collective decisions taken through frank discussions,” Mr Bardhan said after the CPI’s three-day West Bengal state council meeting on Wednesday night. The “big brother” attitude of the Marxist party ignoring the advice of the Front allies, the faulty land acquisition policy of the previous state government, arrogance among a section of the CPI(M) leaders and the failure of the Left Front to reach out to people at large with its issues were identified by the CPI as some of the reasons behind the Left Front’s poll debacle.
Dr Bardhan pointed out that strengthening the CPI organisation in the state through a series of independent party programmes was the need of the hour. He added that joint activities of the Front partners should also continue.
Significantly, earlier the Forward Bloc had also blamed the “arrogance and bureaucratic attitude” of the leaders of the CPI(M) for the worst-ever performance of the Left Front coalition in Bengal. “The bureaucratic approach and arrogant attitude of the leaders cost the Left dearly. The people hate such attitude. That is the main cause of the Left’s dismal show,” Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas said.
