CPM MLA subjected to marathon grilling

Sushanta Ghosh, the heavyweight CPI(M) MLA arrested on charges of murder, was put on marathon interrogation by the criminal investigation department (CID) at its headquarters at Bhawani Bhavan for his role in the skeleton recovery case since Thursday late night. But he appeared to be

a “psychologically tough nut” and has denied his involvement in the case so far, CID sources revealed.
The former paschimanchal unnayan affairs minister was brought by the CID to Kolkata from West Midnapore under tight security at around 11.15 pm on Thursday. The CPI(M) strongman was interrogated by a CID team for over two hours in presence of director general of police (CID) V.V. Thambi. When the ice did not melt, senior CID officers led by Mr Thambi huddled into a high-level meeting on Friday morning to chalk out the interrogation tricks to extract details from Mr Ghosh. A special team led by additional director general of police (I) of the CID C.V. Muralidhar was formed to quiz him. Deputy inspector general of police (operations) of the CID K. Jayaraman was also included in the team.
A doctor examined Mr Ghosh and at around 10 am, the CID started grilling him which continued till afternoon. He was cross-examined in front of his confidential assistant Debashish Pyne and a CPI(M) leader Gunadhar Rana, arrested by the CID in July. Asked on his role in the murder and burial of the Trinamul Congress activists near his house at Benachapra village on September 22, 2002, the CPI(M) district secretariat member evaded the question and claimed that he could not “remember” any such incident, sources disclosed. The interrogation process continued in the evening also. “He is yet to accept his role. We expect him to confess in the next few days,” said a senior CID officer who interrogated him.
Apart from his link in the case, Mr Ghosh however co-operated in the interrogation. Acting on his disclosure, the CID is now searching for three other accused: Prashanta Ghosh, his brother Imtiaz Ali and Tarun Roy.
