Doc, staff beaten up by patient’s kin

A doctor and three staff of a hospital in Burdwan were beaten up by angry relatives of a patient and others alleging of medical negligence. A mob went on the rampage after the death of Abhijit Mondal in Kalna sub-divisional hospital on Saturday morning. They assaulted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Arup Das who fell down after being punched. Three other employees of the hospital were also beaten.

Biswajit Mondal, the brother of the deceased, alleged that although Abhijit, a resident of Balagarh in Hooghly district was admitted to the hospital on the night of March 28, a doctor attended on him on the afternoon of March 20. “He was suffering from diarrhoea but he was not given medical aid in time. My brother died because of medical negligence,” he added. The superintendent of the hospital, Abhirup Mondal, said that the complaint of negligence would be looked into.
The SP of Burdwan S.M.H. Meerza said that three persons had been arrested for the assault and vandalism. Biswajit claimed that his family members had not beaten the hospital staff. “Some outsiders clearly took advantage of the situation and assaulted the doctor,” he added.
