State govt to set up an IIIT in Kalyani
Age correspondent
Kolkata, Nov. 1
An Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) will be set up at Kalyani. It was decided in a meeting of the Cabinet standing committee on industry and infrastructure which was chaired by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday.
The Centre has planned to set up 20 IIITs across the country.
State commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee said, “The state government has decided to set up one such university (IIIT) at Kalyani. We want to get two IIITs, but so far the Centre has allotted us one.”
According to the plan, the institute would come up on a 50-acre plot at Kalyani. “WEBEL has 100 acres’ land at Kalyani, of which 50 acres would be allocated for the IIIT. An IT hub will come up on the rest 50 acres,” Mr Chatterjee added.
