Four accused remanded to CID custody
The Burdwan court on Monday sent the four accused in the double murders of CPI(M) leaders — Pradip Tah and Kamal Gayen — to two days’ CID custody.
Tah and Gayen were brutally murdered allegedly by Trinamul Congress supporters on February 22. An FIR was lodged against 22 persons and the police had arrested four of them on the same day. Surprisingly, the police did not seek their custody and the four accused were sent to jail custody. On last Friday, expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of investigation by the district police, Calcutta high court asked the government to hand over the probe to the CID
On Saturday, a four-member CID team had visited the four accused lodged in a jail in Burdwan and interrogated them for nearly two hours. Apparently, the CID slueths realised that they needed to be grilled in detail. Therefore, they sought their custody and the court granted it on Monday.
Sources said that CID officers would try to find out from the accused about the whereabouts of the 18 other accused who have not yet been arrested. “They would also like to know if the two CPI(M) leaders were killed on the instruction of someone,” sources claimed.
Expressing his pleasure over the court order, Subrata Mukherjee who had filed a PIL in Calcutta high court seeking a CBI probe into the case, said that he hoped that truth would surface.
