Gangopadhyay remembered in book fair
For 34 long years, writer Sunil Gangopadhyay was synonymous with Kolkata Book Fair. But after the demise of the prolific writer in 2012, he has now become a part of discussion in the fair as Sunil Gangopadhyay Memorial Lecture was held for the first time on Monday. “Genius is a difficult man to live with.
Infact, I learned a lot from Sunilda and we are indebted to him,” said writer Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay while reminiscing the contribution Gangopadhyay made not only in the field of literature but also to upgrade the book fair.
Delivering the keynote speech, Bangladeshi author Professor Anisuzzaman said, “Today, Bengali as a language is going through a crisis as younger generation is keen on learning English as first language. But we can inject a fresh interest in them for their mother tongue with the help of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s works.”
Meanwhile, the first Sunil Gangopadhyay Memorial Award was conferred on poet Bithi Chattopadhyay. She recalled the late writer’s influence on her.
