GRP constable beats man, 55, to death
A GRP constable beat a 55-year-old man to death at Berhampore railway station in Murshidabad.
Dilip Ghose and his wife from Bongaon were spending the night at the waiting room on their way to Rampurhat on Monday. They had come from a religious trip to Tarapith.
A GRP personnel Paritosh Biswas wanted to see their tickets. Even after Ghosh showed the tickets, he kept on harassing him. According to eyewitnesses, he questioned the relationship of the aged couple and demanded proof of their marriage. The elderly man could not endure the insult of his wife and this led to an altercation. Biswas thrashed Ghosh.
As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed by the people present at the station to a nearby hospital where he died. His wife in a complaint lodged with the police said the station master did not respond to her appeals for help.
Biswas was arrested on Tuesday and sent to GRP custody for three days by the Berhampore chief judicial magistrate court. SRP Sealdah Utpal Naskar said that an inquiry had already been started against the accused constable and he was suspended from duty.
Later, DIG rail Swapan Maity said that he would ask for a CID inquiry in the case. Union minister for state for railway Adhir Chowdhury condemned the incident. He said that the law would take its own course and the guilty would be given be exemplary punishment.
