Heroin worth Rs 25 lakhs seized
Heroin worth Rs 25 lakhs was seized in the city on Saturday. Ironically, this major haul of narcotics was seized on a day which is observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The Railway Protection Force personnel seized the drugs at the Sealdah railway station from a peddler who was carrying the consignment to Kharagpur.
Working on a tip-off, RPF officials intercepted one Sheikh Anwar from Sealdah. Anwar had brought the consignment from Keshtopur in Lalgola, Murshidabad, and was heading for Kharagpur in West Midnapore. This was the third time that Anwar was carrying a consignment of drugs on this route.
The RPF officials informed the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The NCB officers checked and verified that the white substance in three packets and weighing 250 grams was heroin indeed. The market value of the seized drug is Rs 25 lakhs.
The NCB had sent a team each to Kharagpur and Lalgola to apprehend the receiver and the drug dealer.
