Hospital faces blood shortage
When above 100 injured people were brought to the Suri Sadar Hospital from the accident site at Sainthia, there was a severe shortage of blood in the small-town hospital. When this news was telecast, political parties and NGO came out on the streets making appeals to the people to donate blood. As a result, large number of ordinary people, specially youth, thronged the hospital to donate blood.
Setting aside their political differences, members of the SFI and the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad, appealed to the people through microphones to donate blood. Social organisations like Bharat Seva Sangha and Mangal Chetna also helped the injured and the relatives of the dead. “When the injured were brought here in the morning, we had shortage of almost every group’s blood. Then people started pouring in to donate their blood. As a result, we now have over 250 units of surplus blood in stock,” the medical technician of the blood bank at Suri hospital Akhtarul Alam said.
