KMC mulls security clocks for fire safety check
In a move to keep a check on the fire safety norms in the markets at night, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is planning to introduce security clocks, which first came into use in the 1970. This new device will ensure the accountability of the security staff manning municipal corporation markets.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Surya Sen Market Complex fire rose to 21 on Saturday after another victim succumbed to his injuries at the NRS Medical College and Hospital. Dinesh Chatterjee from Shantipur was battling for life since February 27.
According to the new proposal, the security clocks would stop operating after a specific interval (which can be adjusted) and the security guards will be expected to wind the clock again within that period to ensure that it remains operational.
The agency is likely to install multiple number of clocks across all civic markets and the onus will be on the security guard to keep all the clocks going. Member mayor-in-council (MMiC) of civic markets, Tarak Singh, said once it is implemented, the security staff will have to keep roaming around the market to make sure that the clocks remained operational and displayed the correct time.
He added that many organisations around the country still use the system. Mr Singh said the KMC was on the lookout for companies that still manufacture such clocks.
Apart from this, the MMiC has also decided to provide 16 market superintendents with 3G-enabled mobile phones so that their locations can be traced by using the video calling facility on the handsets.
