Mamata gets it wrong, 2 held
The police arrested two persons in connection with the rape of a woman after dragging her out of a train near Katwa in Burdwan district, puncturing holes in chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that the entire incident was “fabricated” to defame her government.
The police arrested late on Friday night Nayan Sheikh and Farid Sheikh from Chouhata village in Labhpur police station area in neighbouring Birbhum district. “We have arrested two people from Birbhum’s Labhpur in connection with the alleged rape at Katwa,” Burdwan superintendent of police S.H. Mirza said.
The duo was produced in Katwa court which sent him to 10 days police custody. Earlier two more persons were arrested but only on charges of dacoity in the train and not for rape.
On the night of February 25, a gang of dacoits looted the passengers of Ahmedpur-Katwa train near near Panchundi village. They dragged a woman passenger and her 12 year old daughter out of the train and allegedly raped the 30 year old woman in front of her daughter. Later around midnight she lodged a complaint of rape at Katwa GRP.
On February 28, the chief minister dismissed the rape charge as baseless. “A complaint of rape has been filed. Nothing has been found in the medical report. There is no evidence of rape. A political party has planned to use its workers to cry rape,” she had said.
Ms Banerjee even claimed that the woman’s husband is a CPI(M) supporter.
