Mamata’s veiled message to GJM
Arriving on a three-day visit to North Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that the people of the state would never tolerate a secessionist movement. This was a veiled message to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership which had threatened to relaunch a movement to press for their demand for a separate Gorkhaland.
Further elaborating her point, she said that such disruptive agitations sent a wrong message to the tourists. “So many tourists are now coming to Darjeeling. This has given a boost to the economy of Darjeeling and the plains have also benefited from this,” she said.
In a bid to reach out to the people of the hills, the chief minister said she wanted them to be happy and live in peace. She again emphasised the need for unity among the people of the plains and the hills.
The relations between the state government and the GJM have deteriorated drastically since Ms Banerjee’s last visit to Darjeeling. Ms Banerjee had faced Gorkhaland demand during a government programme. GJM chief Bimal Gurung later accused Ms Banerjee of interfering in the functioning of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
