Man shot at for defending girl, 1 held

A youth was shot at by a gang of anti-socials in broad daylight as he tried to stop them from molesting a teeange girl at Baranagar, on the northern outskirts of the city, on Saturday afternoon.

The Class 10 student of Ananda Ashram Sarada Vidyapeath was walking home from school at around 1.30 pm with another girl student. Two youth started teasing and molesting her near RIC Bazzar in Denmark area. The hapless girl tried to contact her family through her cellphone to no avail. In a coincidence, her neighbour Mangal Sardar was passing through the area and immediately came to her rescue. He confronted the culprits, which lead to a verbal argument. Soon one of the culprit opened fire at him. Alerted by the gunshots, locals rushed to the spot and sensing danger both the culprits fled.
Mangal is admitted to the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital with bullet injury in one hand. His condition is stated as serious. A local woman recalled, “When I heard the sound of firing I initially thought it was a bike accident. I came out of my house and saw a youth lying on the road. Blood was oozing from his hand.”
The girl’s private tutor said, “She came to my house with her friend and both were clearly shaken when they narrated their ordeal.”
The girl later went to the Baranagar police station. Barrackpore police commissioner Sanjay Singh also came there with other senior police officers for the probe. The girl informed the cops that one of the accused had also followed her outside her school two days ago.
The police showed her photographs of known criminals of the area. She identified one of them who was earlier arrested for snatching and was released on bail recently. A case on charges of molestation and attempt to murder has been started and a manhunt has been launched. The police is also trying to obtain Mangal’s version of the chain of events.
The broad daylight incident of molestation and shooting of a youth by criminals has sent shockwaves in Baranagar area.
Meanwhile, a man from Kashipur in South 24 Parganas Raju Mollah was arrested for allegedly molesting a Class 6 student on her way to school in Rajarhat on Saturday morning. She informed her teachers about the incident after reaching school. “He took me inside a jungle and asked me not to tell what he did with me to my parents,” the girl said.
Meanwhile, a bus passenger was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman in Gariahat. Travelling on her two-wheeler the middle-aged woman was returning home after shopping at around 7.45 pm. The bus was running beside her. As the bus stopped near Bijan Setu, passenger Kartick Das of Mathurpur in South 24 Parganas got down and touched her indecently. The woman protested.
Kartick’s associates Abdur Rezzak of Mathurapur and Ibrahim Sardar of Joynagar backed Das. The trio then threatened her. A police team incidentally patrolling in plainclothes led by officer in-charge of the Gariahat police station D.K. Ghosh, immediately intervened and arrested all three.
