People forced to spend night out in the open

As the authorities continued with the hectic rescue operation in east Delhi’s Lalita Park area late on Tuesday evening, people living in buildings adjacent to the collapsed structure were allegedly forcibly evacuated from their houses by them without providing any proper accommodation.

Hundreds of people, including women and children, gathered in a park near the collapsed structure and were accusing the Delhi police and the Delhi government for turning a blind eye to their miseries. As the rains hit the area in the afternoon, locals erected makeshift tents to provide shelter to the people. No one had any idea where these people were going to stay for the night. “What are we supposed to do now. No one is bothered. The police came to our house and removed us forcibly. When we asked them to allow us to take our belongings, they refused. We are sitting under an open sky without any food or water. Who should we complain to?,” Pushpa, 37, who stayed in a building adjacent to five storied N 168, which collapsed on Monday evening, said.
“The police has asked us to evacuate the building. Two families, who were staying here, left in the morning. But I have many valuables lying inside. How can we leave just like that,” Amjad, who owns a building close to the site of tragedy, said.
The locals of Lalita Park had hired a caterer to prepare dal and chapattis for the needy people with the volunteers distributing food among the evacuated people, “We took money from all the people living in Lalita Park and hired a caterer to provide food to them,” Rajneesh Kumar, a resident said.
Asked whether any official had provided them with any monetary support, he said, “The money has been donated by the people of the area.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
