Rehabilitation process begins
After the intervention of Human Rights Commission and a visit by sub-divisional officer Tanvir Afzal at the fire-ravaged site, the rehabilitation process at Solobigha slum in Maheshtala Municipality began on Tuesday, two days after it was reduced to ashes. Around 700 shanties were gutted in Saturday’s blaze which mercifully injured none.
The Human Rights Commission has also given a strict 10-day deadline to submit a report on the fire incident.
Thousands have lost their homes and rehabilitating the affected families seemed like a monumental job to the ministers. The futile assurance by state urban development minister, Firhad Hakim of starting the rehabilitation process from Monday had failed to materialise even on Tuesday morning.
It was the SDO, Mr Afzal’s visit to the fire-ravaged spot and his talks with the ministers that set the dice rolling.
The site has been divided in 55 blocks and each block will accommodate six houses. “Keeping the earlier incident in mind, the blocks have been created in such manner that in case of a fire, it will not spread to other houses. Within the next 10 days, the process of rehabilitating the affected families will be finished,” Mr Afzal said.
