Respite from heat in next 24 hrs likely
Kolkatans are likely to get some respite from the ongoing discomfort and hot conditions in the next 24 hours. The officials at the regional meteorological centre, Alipore, has forecasted that the city and its adjacent areas are likely to experience rain or thundershower in some areas during evening and night.
“We have seen the formation of thunder clouds, which is likely to give way to rain. However, this ongoing hot and humid conditions is due to the hot winds blowing from the northern and western part of India,” met centre director G.C. Debnath said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, at least two person and 50 others were injured after a high-speed Nor’wester hit Karimpur Block 1 on Thursday.
“Several houses collapsed and a large number of crops were damaged due to the sudden squall, ” Nadia district magistrate Somesh Bhattacharjee said, adding that a special relief team from Krishnagar had been rushed to the affected areas of Jasherpur, Basatipara, Anandapally Natna, Ghoramara including the Karimpur town. The wind with speed of 60-70 km blew across the block around 6 pm with communication system collapsed in several areas.
Meanwhile, the weathermen also issued squall warning in some of the districts. “The thunder squall with wind speed reaching between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour could occur at isolated places over Sub Himalayan West Bengal in the next 24 hours,” one of the met official said.
