Security agency without licence, ex-Armyman held
The crackdown on the fake private security agencies by the Kolkata police in wake of the dacoity and murder at an upscale flat in Ultadanga continued as a retired Army officer was arrested by the Watgunge police on Wednesday for running security provider’s business without any licence. The accused, Debdas Dutta, 62, is a retired major of the Indian Army.
In the afternoon, the resident of Malipanchghara in Howrah was arrested from the one-room office of his agency — Fauji Security — at Kabi Tirtha Sarani near the Watgunge police station. “The agency came under scanner during our verification of documents and functioning of the private security agencies. Most of its clients are factories in the districts, including Howrah,” a senior police officer said.
Dutta retired as a major from the Indian Army in 1982. “In August 2010, Dutta opened the agency. He did not obtain any licence for Fauji Security and employed nearly 110 security guards. He was running it under the shadow of another private security agency which had obtained licence. The Alipore court, however, granted him conditional bail,” he added.

Aug. 10: The Progressive Tea Workers’ Union (PTWU), the labour wing of Adivasi Vikas Parishad, called off its indefinite strike on Wednesday following the state government’s assurance to look into their demands.
PTWU chairman Sukra Munda announced the withdrawal of the strike which started on Tuesday. The development came a day after the union’s representatives discussed their demands with state commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee in presence of labour minister Purnendu Bose and North Bengal Development minister Gautam Deb in Kolkata.
However, 20 other trade unions, including Citu and Intuc, have decided to go ahead with their three-day strike from Wednesday.
