Sudipto death: Cops fail to submit report
The Kolkata police is in the dock once again as it has failed to submit the enquiry report on SFI leader Sudipto Gupta’s death to the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) within a week’s deadline.
The city police may pray for more time to finish the probe and finalise the report, sources said.
Taking suo moto cognisance on April 2 of the 22-year-old’s death in the police custody, the human rights body had directed city top cop Surajit Kar Purkayastha to conduct an enquiry by an officer of additional police commissioner-rank and submit a report with his (the police commissioner’s) comments within seven days.
Senior police officers, on anonymity, said that the West Bengal Human Rights Commission’s order reached Lalbazar, the city police headquarters on April 8.
Even if the week’s deadline is calculated since that date, no enquiry report has been submitted to the commission till Monday.
Sources disclosed that the forensic report of Gupta’s death is yet to reach the top brass of the city police which is causing the delay in completing the probe.
