Three more held for vandalism

Three more youths were arrested on Friday for the vandalism at the Baker Laboratory and other departments of the Presidency University. Jorashanko police had earlier on Thursday arrested two youths in connection to the incident.

The five were produced at the Bankshall court, where four were sent to judicial custody till April 26 and one was granted bail. Surprisingly, Trinamul Chhatra Parishad members filed an FIR against two of the Presidency students - Debarshi Chakraborty who was incidentally assaulted by the miscreants on the day of vandalism and Chhandok Chatterjee . They were charged for allegedly pelting stones. Both the students had to surrender at Bankshall Court to obtain bail.
Meanwhile, joint commissioner of police (headquarters) Javed Shamim said, “We have arrested three more persons. A total of five persons have been arrested.”
Among the new arrests are a management student Ananyabrata Chakraborty, students of City College of Commerce - Chiranjit Gayen and Munna Singh. Subhojeet Burman and Jayanta Howlader were already arrested on Thursday. Subhojeet’s mother has admitted that he is a Trinamul Chhatra Parishad worker even as the party denies any hand in the attack.
Meanwhile, the lawyer of the accused questioned in the court as to why medical reports of the injured were not submitted with the court.
He also sought for the seizure report by the police of the vandalised Bakers Laboratory. The lawyer also appealed to the court to grant Munna bail as he has an examination on April 16.
Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the university’s vice-chancellor on Friday and assured full support.
Vice-chancellor Malabika Sarkar said, “I received a call from the chief minister. She has assured full support to us. She said that Presidency was her dream project and she is devastated by the incident. She said that she would not let anything come in the way of achieving that goal.”
