Top cop comes to couple’s rescue
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and two constables of the Lake Police Station in south Kolkata were suspended by Kolkata Police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha on Tuesday, following a complaint by a young man and woman.
The two friends went to the Rabindra Sarovar Lake and were sitting together to spend time on Sunday. The place, reportedly, is a favourite spot for the cops to extort money from young couples under the threat of false implication.
According to sources, it was then that police personnel— ASI Amitava Dey and two constables Keshab Roy and Nirmal Das— went there in civil clothes and started harassing and humiliating the couple. A verbal duel ensued as the youth protested.
Picking up, they thrashed him mercilessly.
The woman was not even spared. She was subjected to their verbal abuse. Later, when the couple went to the Lake police station to file an FIR, the police officers refused to lodge their complaint. They only allowed them to make a general diary. The couple further said that officer-in-charge of the police station Partha Sarathi Mukhopadhyay threatened them for the withdrawal of their complaint.
With the help of a lawyer, the couple lodged a complaint with Mr Purkayastha on Monday. The police commissioner directed deputy commissioner of police (south east division) Debabrata Das to investigate the incident and report to him.
The investigation indicted the ASI and two police constables for their role, sources added.
With their suspension they were removed from duty during the day and departmental proceedings have been started against them.
