Woman attempts suicide, recovery agents arrested
Unable to bear the harassment by the agents of a micro-financing company, a woman set herself ablaze at Berhampore in Murshidabad on Monday.
Purnima Bhaskar, 32, however, survived and is admitted at the Berhampore State General Hospital. Inspector-in-charge, Berhampore, M. Haque informed that two agents have been arrested in connection with the incident which took place in Saidabad Dayamoyee Kalibari area.
Ms Bhaskar’s husband had taken a loan of Rs 15,000 from a micro-finance company in Madhupur area but had failed to repay it. On Monday morning, two loan recovery agents — Manoj Das and Golam Mustafa — came to Ms Bhaskar’s residence and verbally abused her. At that time her husband Dilip Bhaskar, a carpenter by profession, was not at home. Unable to bear the humiliation and insult, Ms Bhaskar locked herself in her bathroom, poured kerosene oil and set herself on fire. The locals rescued her and admitted her to the hospital. They also thrashed the two loan recovery agents. Later the Berhampore police rescued and arrested the duo.
