‘Actors lack style sense’

After actress Priyanka Chopra was named the best dressed by a popular magazine, actress Kangna Ranaut too gave a thumbs up to Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor’s dressing sense and said that Bollywood is very low on style. At the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, she was quoted as saying, “The style quotient is missing in Bollywood except for Priyanka and Sonam who know how to carry themselves well.”
Agreeing with the Kangna’s comment, designer Nida Mahmood finds Sonam, Priyanka and Sushmita Sen to be the only three women in the entire industry who have a sense of style. “These are the only actresses who understand fashion. They know what is trendy and what works for them. If the androgynous look is in, Sonam flaunts it the right way. Most Bollywood stars run after designer labels and are obsessed with crystals. Be it a Western evening dress or traditional outfits, they feel that loading themselves with crystals makes them look amazing. But it looks really atrocious,” says Nida.
Seconds designer Siddartha Tytler, who besides Sonam Kapoor finds Sonali Bendre very stylish. He says that most of them go wrong as they are not ready to experiment. “Unlike Hollywood actresses, they don’t open up to style easily. I think their look is slowly turning boring. I feel most of them need to really update their stylebook.”
Many also feel that B-town ladies tend to go overboard. Designer Puja Nayyar says, “I think Kareena, Katrina, and Deepika always look sexy and carry them really well. But there are actresses who need fashion tips. Many of them go overboard and pair bold coloured outfits with loud makeup, which is just not right. There are few who still wear long balloon sleeves and wedges, which is out of fashion.”
Designer Poonam Bhagat, who backs Katrina Kaif’s casual style statement, says, “Style is innate and inborn. Bollywood divas often go wrong as they try too hard.”
Nida feels Bollywood follows a herd mentality. “They see and hear about fashion and try copying it without knowing their body type. There are some pear-shaped actresses who copy the young and often flaunt tiny dresses and make a mess of themselves.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
