‘Actors should be versatile’
Having grown up in Delhi and spent his college days here, actor Divyendu Sharma has fond memories of the city. But he feels that a lot has changed over the last few years. “Some of these changes are positive and some are not,” he smiles.
It is only coincidental that his upcoming film, in which he will play a solo lead for the first time is titled Zalim Dilli. The film also stars theatre actress Ira Dubey and Miss India 2012, Prachi Mishra. It also marks the big screen debut of desi rapper, Honey Singh.
“As the title suggests, the film is based in Delhi and is a story of an IAS aspirant, who initially is an idealistic fellow but circumstances force him to turn grey. I have no comic dialogues in the film, for a change,” says Divyendu.
So was the decision to take up a serious role a conscious one? “I loved the script and yes, it is important to portray a variety of characters. Actors are typecast and stamped quite easily in the industry,” he says.
Divyendu has been staying in Mumbai for last eight years. But he shares, that even the mention of Delhi makes him nostalgic. “I was part of Players, the drama society of Kirorimal College. We used to literally eat, drink and sleep theatre,” he recollects.
He also mentions that every time he visits the city now, he feels like an outsider. “The city dwellers have become very intolerant and violent. Road rage is rampant. It feels like the warmth once associated with Delhiwallas is diminishing steadily,” laments Divyendu.
