After Kolaveri, now it’s Nenjikulle

Kolaveri, a love song, peppered with English words at funny intervals, made history without meaning to. Anirudh Ravichander, who penned the lyrics, called it a ‘soup song’. Never has the angst and rage and fever of love been caught more ridiculously than it was in Kolaveri.

A year later, there is yet another Tamil song soaring the popularity charts. Nenjikulle, sung by Shakthisree Gopalan, is going viral. There is a reason why ARR is being hailed as another Mozart. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of his craft that strikes a chord. Or maybe it’s just his ability to find talents like Shakthisree Gopalan.
The song which premiered on MTV Unplugged on November 3, has already been watched by over 1,43,000 registered users and been liked over 45,000 times on Facebook. Rahman tweeted, “OMG... OMG... Didn’t expect such kind of remarks for our MTV Unplugged event. Thanks so much for all your love.”
Rahman said, “I am really excited at the response Nenjikulle is getting. I hope people receive it well. This version is slightly different from the CD (album) version though.”
An elated Shakthisree Gopalan, says, “It’s a beautiful song and I’m blessed to have got the opportunity to sing it. The entire musical arrangement and melody worked for the song. Vairamuthu’s lyrics are simply touching. I have been getting a lot of feedback from people world over. Just the fact that people are taking time out to write to me on social networking sites shows that we as a team have been able to reach out.”
Talking about the ingredients to ensure a song going viral online, singer Sunita Sarathy who has sung three songs in Don 2, says, “The marketing of the song has to be good. And with names like ARR, Vairamuthu and a film that has garnered so much newsprint already, this was bound to happen. The music and the voice that carry it have to be good. But something going viral has to come with an entire package of backing and brand names. It’s also about understanding and tackling online behaviour.”
