All set to ace the race

Sitting behind the wheels and zipping through roads is probably something most guys love to do. However, hectic lifestyles and heavy traffic hardly leave much scope.

Most satiate their ‘need for speed’ through gaming on consoles or computers. Actor Kunal Kapoor has never been a conventional guy. While his choice of roles and passion for good cinema has been much discussed, Kapoor is all set to take his love for car racing to the next level. He will be participating in the National Rally Championship next year.
“I love racing cars and flying planes. The adrenaline rush I feel when I sit in a racing car is unparalleled. It is important for me to realise my hobbies and take them to newer levels. Apart from acting, these are essential aspects of my life,” says the lanky actor, with his charming, dimpled smile.
He further adds that having hobbies outside one’s own profession “allows one to de-stress and explore a whole new facet of oneself.”
On being asked whether he has always been a lover of speed, he discloses, “I have always loved fast cars but I realised that I needed to get off the road to test my limits, otherwise I would be endangering my life as well as the lives of others. That’s when I got into rally driving, almost a year-and-a-half back.”
Talking about the training, he says he will have to put in a lot of hard work to train for the national championship. “My coach wants me to compete in the nationals. It’s a skill that needs to be honed as you need to understand your car, the terrain you are driving on, and develop the stamina needed to focus on long hours of driving,” he says.
Moving on to his film career, he is immensely happy with the positive response, his latest flick, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana received from the audience. “I was involved with the film right from scripting stage. It feels nice when your efforts are recognised. As of now, I am basking in its glory,” he smiles.
Since he has managed to act with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Aamir Khan and SRK, we ask him if single-hero projects are important. “I really have never thought about my career in terms of lead roles, character artist, cameos and such. A role just needs to be interesting for me. And the movie has to be one that I really want to be a part of,” he adds.
So when do we see him next on screen? “I have a few scripts under consideration and will soon take my call. Right now I am on a hiatus. But will be back soon,” he signs off.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
