If you have been following the B-town’s various bashes, you wouldn’t have missed how everybody from Jaya Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit to Sonakshi Sinha and Saba Ali Khan have been donning anarkalis in all hues from bright red to sober white.

Anarkali kurtas along with churidaar, which everyone thought would be out this year because it’s been in for such a long time, has suddenly become the most wanted thing again! As the wedding season is on the anvil, will anarkalis stay hot?
“Anarkalis can fit 20 to 55 years olds. The long, flowing, shimmering fabric accentuates the feminine contours and attracts women from all walks of life. They can be donned for various occasions from weddings to cocktail parties,” says designer Mandira Wirk. Indeed, with numerous layerings, choice of corsets and beautiful dupattas, they are available in numerous varieties and have become a safe option.
Anarkali kurtas with embroidered bodice look just right for festivals. The body fitting bodice enhanced with embellishments such as sequins, beads, bugle beads coupled with zari and resham embroidery make it immensely appealing. “Anarkali kurtas look more dressier than the regular suits and they complement the Indian body type perfectly, creating an illusion of looking slimmer, which every woman wants,” adds designer Kamaali Mehta.
Anarkali style has been around since 14th century. In fact, it has been an intrinsic part of the Mughal wardrobe and thus, have a notion of royalty attached to them. “They emanate a certain grandeur and have a regal quality about them. Weddings are a time, when a bride truly wants to feel royal,” adds Divya Gurwara of Bridal Asia.
For the grand Indian wedding, the anarkalis are very convenient garments. “Anarkalis are easy to wear, the bride can walk and dance around for the pre-wedding occasions. Hence, it is a very popular option for mehendi and sangeet,” adds designer Pam Mehta
And why just for the ladies, the anarkali kurta can also suit the Indian male. Riyaz Ganji did a line of anarkali kurtas for men. “The flares hide the male paunch. An anarkali doesn’t need too much embellishment to look good. You can have just panelling and it looks gorgeous. I see them being around for a few more seasons.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
