Back to front

Strange are the ways of fashion. In a turn of trends, the back story is making a stylish front statement. And the twist is inviting a favourable response from the swish set as they are happily converting the rear picture into the front frame. Shape the idea with a neck cut that finishes with a little bow, slashed cutouts, subtle slits, a knotted blouse, artful splits held with thin bands — all designed for attention. Of course in permissible limits.
Keeping a close watch on the trend, designer Jyoti Sharma specifies, “The cutout fashion is classy yet dangerous but if worn correctly it can make a sophisticated cut. A well defined cutout back can attract all the attention. It’s surprisingly fun, and the neckline can borrow similar ideas too. A side cut is also cool yet sophisticated. Set your eyes on a blouse with a low-cut V-neck with a chemisette attached to promote modesty. The button or bow are both trending as a front placement. They are highly recommended.”
The designer says, “If you want to look elegant, let the garment be the main focus — keep the jewellery minimal, and ensure the footwear is not distractive. Wear nude colour sandals with your cutout outfits. And for evening wear, go for neutral footwear. And keep the make-up restricted. Make sure you wear the trend and the trend doesn’t wear you.”
Designer Kritika Dawar feels the focus should be on a knotty affair. “I would love to revisit the 1980s. If a knot at the back of a blouse is considered feminine, similarly a knot tied in front of the blouse is all about sensuality too. If you are bold enough, then how about flaunting a plunging neckline. But keep in mind, the trend doesn’t work both ways. For instance, a daring front neck should be balanced with a subtle and covered back. The knots too should follow the rule,” she makes it clear.
The role reversal has appealed to designer Pam Mehta’s designing sensibilities as well. “Tie-ups were usually at the back of the dress at the waist or neck, now we see lots of front tie-ups in Indian and western outfits alike.”
She adds, “Beaded straps in multi-colour, contrasting straps or metallic chains, supported with a halter neck is yet another innovative way to carry the back design forward. A lace induced neck that usually draws attention to the back can be placed in the front of the silhouettes in different style. They look classy all the way.”
Whereas, Shraddha Murarka prefers keeping things formal when it comes to this trend. She says, “I’d like to see an evening gown that permits a low-cut neck with an additional keyhole cut around the midriff. The dual cuts complement the trend pretty well, while the back should not be much in highlight.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
