Bare the ‘chest’

God perhaps never thought the 21st century man would stoop to such ‘razor’cism! But with beauties like Chitraganda Singh, Neha Dhupia and others up with razors supporting the clean-shaved look, the poor man has to bow down to pressure. Though it’s Movember, the metrosexual man cannot afford to flaunt his hair. He can show-off the mooch, but not his hairy chest!

“Flaunting your manliness with a hairy chest is a passé. Now everything is about going metrosexual, the rough and rugged look is out! A clean chest definitely looks good. I personally have no such ‘hairy’ issues, but I think, it looks more presentable and is hygienic,” says model Acquin Paes. With the V-neck Ts and see-through shirts back in fashion, many guys play it safe by keeping the look clean. Apparently, it’s not just about looking sexy and stylish. It’s more to do with hygiene. Even the fairer sex seems to agree with the thought. “I definitely prefer clean-chest men. They look neat. Look at Salman Khan, he is one actor who looks the best among the lot. Waxing the chest is as normal as shaving, so why shy away from it,” asks television actor Shama Sikander.
But there is no denying that it is a popular trend among the men from the glam industry. The confidence of baring it all comes from a great physique and a hairless body. The image of a macho man has been redefined with the new-age perceptions. “If you have it, then flaunt it, is the formula in the glamour business. That’s why most men like to show-off their clean look,” says actor Angad Hasija. With Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan topping the ‘best-chest’ chart, many younger models are also toeing the line of these superstars. But one man who will always be forgiven for his ‘hairy’ look is definitely Anil Kapoor. “Men with hairy chest definitely look bad. But the only one who might look bad with a waxed chest is Anil Kapoor. I am so used to seeing him with the hair, that it might look strange if he had a clean chest,” laughs Sargun Mehta, an actor and comedian.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
