Big banners don’t matter: Rajkumar
Rajkumar Yadav doesn’t fear being labelled as a “certain kind” of actor. The actor who made his debut with Dibankar Banerjee’s Love Sex aur Dhokha has hopes high for Abhishek Kapoor’s, Kai Po Che, which is based on author Chetan Bhagat’s best-selling novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life.
Set in the backdrop of the Gujarat riots, the film follows the story of three friends — Ishaan, Omi and Govind, who have a passion for cricket, business and religion. Elaborating on his role, Rajkumar says that he’s playing a young Gujarati, Govind Patel, in the film, who’s keen to set up his business. “The film is about the high and lows in the relationship between three friends,” he says.
“Interestingly, in a multi-starrer of this kind, while the focus may not be on one actor, each character is equally strong,” he adds.
We have to understand, the pulse of the today’s audience. “Script is the hero today,” adds Rajkumar, who also played the lead in Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS.
An FTII, Pune, passout, Rajkumar, who’s from Delhi, says that he is quite choosy about his films.
“As a trained actor, what fascinates me is the story and later comes the banner and the maker of the film. I would say I was lucky enough to bag Dibakar Banerjee’s film immediately after I passed out of FTII,” he says.
According to Rajkumar, low budget, reality-based films are doing well because the audiences readily establish connect with the characters. And as an actor, I will want to play characters, which are believable.
But Kai Po Che is not all that’s keeping him busy. The actor has a bunch of films in his kitty lined up for release. “It has been a privilege working with Anurag Kashyap. I am so excited about Gangs of Wasseypur-II.” The actor, who has proven his mettle with theatre, will also be seen in Talaash, Queens and Shahid in near future.
