Big fat Indian wedding
It would be a moment worth a thousand pictures to see American pop singer Katy walking down as an Indian bride to solemnise vows with British comedian Russell Brand in a wedding according to Hindu rituals in Rajasthan on Saturday.
So what will Katy Perry wear on the most important day of her life? A traditional lehenga or a contemporary sari with a twist? Even as her fans can’t wait to see what the bride will sizzle in, we ask designers in the capital what should Katy wear.
Designer Poonam Bhagat says, “Maybe a sari worn in a contemporary style. A completely traditional outfit will be incongruous for the couple. Care must be taken that everything is not over-the-top — be it the make-up or jewellery. Not too many bangles, just a choker would be perfect. It would be lovely to see Katy with marigold in her hair. But then again, maybe she doesn’t like flowers.”
Poonam suggests that Katy can opt for a red chiffon or georgette sari. “Since they are getting married in Rajasthan they can pay their respect to the place through their outfits. Her sari should be simple, with not too many sequins, but a vintage look with very little zardozi work,” she adds.
However, Falguni Peacock, whose catsuit was worn by Katy recently at the X-Factor red carpet on Sunday, won’t say much. Not affirming if they have indeed designed bridal wear for Katy, Falguni says, “We sent her something in London, but until she wears it, we can’t confirm anything. We recently designed two body suits for her, she wore one on the X-Factor red carpet on Sunday. She has kept the other grand black catsuit for a bigger event.”
It’s no surprise that India is fast emerging as an ideal destination. Julia Roberts spent considerable time here for Eat, Pray, Love. And Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is likely to be shot here too. Shantanu Mehra of Nikhil-Shantanu feels that the couple must explore the rich heritage of India. “In terms of what they can wear, well, Russell can sport a light-weight sherwani with trousers. He could also wear a short achkan and incorporate aspects of Indian culture like brooches, and a turban. As for Katy, a new-age sari would be good.
Rajasthan, the land of royalty, has witnessed celebrity weddings like that of Liz Hurley-Arun Nayyar and charmed many like Madonna, Britney Spears, Gerard Butler.
Talking about why Rajasthan is popular, Ritu Kumar says, “A romantic place that has so much colour and history, Rajasthan will always be a favourite for those in love.”
Poonam agrees that it is a place synonymous with royalty and has a regal charm. It is a land of maharajas and opulence, and the exotic appeal of the Orient.
