Binge drinking can harm your system: experts
Downing a peg or two every night is significantly better on the health than restricting the tipple to only weekends. The latter, the research says, is harmful because people who drink only over weekends tend to binge drink, which in turn results in many health hazards.
Dietician Naini Setalvad says that while drinking in any form would be harmful for the system, it is binge drinking, which is the worst and the one that is most likely to lead to alcoholism. “If one is going to have seven pegs over the week, I’d rather have it spaced out, one drink a day, rather than have them all in one go. Binge drinking leads to dehydration, loss of control and is extremely harmful for the body. One peg per day doesn’t do that kind of damage,” she says.
Self-proclaimed weekend drinker Alaap Deboor says that the theory works best on paper and doesn’t have as much actual relevance. “If you’re going to drink everyday, then you’re still corrupting your system and you also get branded as a drunkard. And what is the guarantee that you won’t end up binge drinking during one or two of these sessions anyway? I’d much rather prefer to restrict my sessions to the weekends and try not bingeing on these occasions,” he says.
