The bird is now singing music
Say hello to Twitter #music, a new standalone music service that is another feather in the company’s hat! The social media company unveiled the new service, explaining it in its official blog post as a service that “uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists.”
Twitter #music, which is also available now as a free app, will help users find and follow musicians and learn more about which musicians they follow, leading to more music discovery.
A #NowPlaying screen will show Twitter users all the songs being tweeted by the people they follow, and let them listen along. The interface has little squares that include an album cover image with a Twitter profile pic and name on top of it.
Twitter #music also includes a suggested music screen and encourages instant sharing: you can tweet what you’re listening to directly from the Player screen. As for where the music comes from, it’s a combination of Spotify, iTunes and Rdio. iTunes previews play automatically, but for full songs you’ll need an Rdio or Spotify account, clearly making Twitter #music a music discovery service, and not a free music streaming service.
It’s true that people often talk to each other about music, tweeting about songs they like, they link to artists, they retweet what their favourite pop stars say. And they seem to have cashed in on this behaviour. “Twitter and music go great together. People share and discover new songs and albums every day,” said Twitter in the blog.
