Black girl turns teen style guru

Following in the footsteps of fashionable tweens from the West like Lourdes and Miley Cyrus, India’s own teen actress-turned-fashionista, Ayesha Kapur, jumped onto the label bandwagon recently by launching a fashion accessories brand, Ayesha, with her mother Jacqueline Kapur.

Launching the range that consists of jewellery, bags, laptop bags, scarves, hats and watches for young girls, Ayesha spoke candidly about her contribution to the label and her fashion sensibilities.
Talking about her inputs and contributions to what may appear largely as her mother’s enterprise at the first glance, Ayesha avers, “I come up with suggestions for designers. As the trends keep changing I keep a watch on what’s in and give my inputs. Whenever I am with my friends I get an idea as to what youngsters like and that is used for designs.” Her mother, Jacqueline, adds, “Her input is integral as she knows the market, new trends and she is there for photoshoots and works on the website and Facebook account.”
After a dream debut in Black followed by a heavy-duty role in Sikandar, Ayesha has many distractions, but keeps a balanced head on her little shoulders, informs Jacqueline, “She has her priorities right. Study is foremost on her list. Horse riding is a passion she follows, but she enjoys acting and definitely wishes to continue.”
For a 16-year-old Ayesha is a keen follower of fashion. Explaining her sensibilities and what fashion for a young girl should be, she says, “What we wear expresses who we are and every teenager must first be comfortable in the clothes she wears. We must have fun dressing up. As there is a lot of variety available, I take a pick, funky or subdued, depending on my mood. And keeping in mind your personality, you can match jewellery and stand out in a crowd.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
