Bling it on this Dhanteras
Diwali is the time to welcome everything beautiful and when we talk of beauty one has to mention jewels that add sparkle in your life. So, as you shop and hope that goddess Laxmi will bring you luck on Dhanteras, many in the city are pampering themselves and indulging in a little dazzle.
Whether you are a Hermes loving fashionista or a working professional, you will end up buying a small something that they say will bring you luck. So as you flock to the nearest jeweller to buy your lucky charm for Dhanteras, experts tell us what’s hot this season.
“On Dhanteras, people generally buy gold as it’s considered auspicious. But today, as plain gold jewellery is not popular, people combine gold with diamonds and coloured stones. Emerald and ruby studded jewellery matches perfectly with traditional outfits. A new colour that has picked up this year is hot pink. Spinel and shades of tourmaline and sapphire also blend well with Indian clothes,” says jewellery designer Mira Gulati of Mirari.
And if you’re someone who doesn’t essentially like to wear gold, designer Gaurav Gupta gives you something that will add oodles of style to your embroidered lehenga. “This Diwali we have experimented with lots of beads, sequins, fabric, net, chains, hooks and even buttons. This is a natural process for me and it is away from the glimmer and shimmer of gold and silver making it a hit with women who want something experimental. It makes you stand out in a crowd, because it doesn’t have the dazzling power of a diamond but it has the lovely sheen of Swarovski,” says Gaurav.
According to jewellery designer Alpana Gujral, trends in designer inspired jewellery are “extreme “this time. “This festive season one can go in for huge cocktail rings and long necklaces. On one end of the scale, celebrities prefer everything big and bright in both sterling silver necklaces and earrings and sterling silver rings have got the power of colour. The other side of the scale is dainty, with intricately designed pieces with small hints of sparkle,” she says.
Jewellery designer Roopa Vohra, who launched her new collection “Nilourfer Hatun” says that the escalating prices haven’t made much of a difference. “Indians have always been open to investing in jewellery, especially when it comes to gold. Celebrities have been forthcoming because it adds to their own personality and they feel the need to experiment with their wardrobe. Every piece speaks a lot about your personality or else people would have simply bought a gold brick and hung it around their necks,” she says.
